Madinah Showcases SDG Progress at UN Forum in New York
The Madinah Region Development Authority highlights the city's pioneering role and Saudi Arabia's leadership in localizing Sustainable Development Goals.
In a significant showcase of progress, the Madinah Region Development Authority participated in the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development at the UN headquarters in New York.
The session, titled 'Transformation from the Ground Up: Acting at Local Level,' underscored Madinah's innovative approach to sustainable development and Saudi Arabia's commitment to Vision 2030.During the forum, Abdulrahman Ibrahim, the authority’s chief data and innovation officer, emphasized that Madinah has become a model for international best practices in localizing SDGs.
The authority highlighted several key initiatives, including:- The 2023 Madinah City Voluntary Local Review, marking the first such initiative in Saudi Arabia and second in the Arab region.- The 2024 State of Sustainable Development Report for the Madinah Region, recognized as the first Voluntary Subnational Review in the Arab world.- The launch of the Atlas of Sustainable Development in Madinah City Neighborhoods, providing a precise, neighborhood-level assessment of SDGs, a global first.The session also focused on successful local and regional approaches to accelerating sustainable solutions for the SDGs.
It discussed key enablers and opportunities to expand local action towards sustainable development.
The authority's participation was part of the Saudi delegation led by Minister of Economy and Planning Faisal Alibrahim, underscoring the Kingdom’s dedication to sustainable development.The UN forum, running from July 21 to 23, featured dialogue sessions on global frameworks for resilient urban development and strategies that leverage data-driven trends to create value for cities.
