Iran hits its highest daily COVID-19 toll, with thousands more critical

Iranian state TV says the country has hit its highest daily coronavirus toll, with 239 new deaths reported on Wednesday, bringing the total number of fatalities to 27,658. More than 4,000 people are still critical.

Iran has recorded its highest number of daily deaths from coronavirus, with 239 new fatalities on Wednesday.

This is four more than the previous daily record, and takes the total number of fatalities to 27,658.

Spokeswoman for the Iranian Ministry of Health, Sima Sadat Lari, told state TV that 4,019 new cases had been confirmed since Tuesday, bringing the total number of cases in the country to 483,844.

Ms Lari said 4,274 patients remain in a critical condition, and 397,109 have recovered.

Iran has been struggling with both the region's largest outbreak and the highest number of fatalities in the Middle East.

Authorities have blamed the high death toll on rampant disregard for health measures, especially by those traveling between cities and gathering at large ceremonies.

Many public places, such as cafes and gyms, have been shut.

The first coronavirus cases and deaths were reported in Iran on the same day in February.

Health officials said some 50 per cent of the fatalities have been recorded in the capital, Tehran, which has a population of 10 million.

Iran was among the first countries outside of China to suffer a major outbreak, with top politicians, health officials and religious leaders in its Shiite theocracy infected with the virus.

It has since struggled to contain the spread of COVID-19 across among the country's population of 80 million, with a second wave beginning in June.

The first coronavirus cases and deaths were reported in Iran on the same day in February — the region's first outbreak of the virus — yet it only saw its highest single-day spike in reported cases in June. The highest daily death toll was reported in July.

In February, authorities denied for days the virus had reached the country, allowing it time to spread as the nation marked the 41st anniversary of its 1979 Islamic Revolution with mass demonstrations.

The country then held a parliamentary election in which authorities desperately sought to boost turnout.
