Iran Approves Law to End Cooperation with Nuclear Watchdog

Iran Approves Law to End Cooperation with Nuclear Watchdog

Tehran's Guardian Council approves legislation to suspend cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency.
The Guardian Council in Iran has approved a new law that mandates the suspension of the country's cooperation with the United Nations' nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

This decision comes amidst ongoing tensions between Iran and Western powers regarding Tehran's nuclear program.

According to sources close to the council, the legislation aims to ensure full respect for national sovereignty and territorial integrity, especially concerning uranium enrichment activities within Iranian borders.

The move follows a recent IAEA resolution that accused Iran of failing to meet its nuclear obligations.

If enacted, this suspension would prevent UN inspectors from monitoring Iran's uranium-enrichment operations at Fordow, Isfahan, and Natanz – sites that have previously been targeted by US military strikes.

Furthermore, the legislation emphasizes the need for self-reliance in safeguarding national interests.

Recent satellite imagery has raised questions about the location of Iran's stockpile of high-enriched uranium, which stands at approximately 400 kilograms.

Prior to last Sunday’s bombing raids, images showed vehicles congregated outside the Fordow nuclear facility, sparking theories that Iran may have been relocating its nuclear materials in response to heightened tensions.

Contradictory statements from key US officials have compounded the uncertainty surrounding this issue.

US President Donald Trump and Defense Secretary Peter Hegseth both claimed on Thursday that the stockpile at Fordow had been destroyed during the recent strikes, contradicting reports suggesting that the convoy may have facilitated a secret relocation of nuclear materials.

Despite conflicting accounts and concerns regarding Iran's compliance with its international obligations, the Guardian Council's approval of this legislation marks a significant development in Iran's relations with the global nuclear watchdog.

The implementation of this law could have far-reaching implications for ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at resolving disagreements surrounding Iran's nuclear program.
