Indonesia sentences foreign nationals for drug smuggling offenses
The country's court hands down lenient prison terms to several foreigners convicted of drug charges.
In recent developments, Indonesian authorities have taken strict action against foreign nationals accused of drug smuggling.
A 25-year-old Brazilian man, identified by the initials YB, was arrested upon arrival in Bali with over 6 pounds of cocaine in his luggage.
Similarly, a South African woman was apprehended at the airport after customs officers discovered 2.1 pounds of cocaine concealed in her underwear.In addition to these arrests, the Denpasar District Court recently sentenced three British nationals to one year in jail for drug offenses, dropping a charge that could have carried the death penalty.
The court found Jonathan Christopher Collyer, 28, and his partner Lisa Ellen Stocker, 29, guilty of possessing 2.2 pounds of cocaine worth an estimated $368,000.
Their accomplice, Phineas Ambrose Float, 31, was also arrested in connection with the case.Furthermore, an Argentine woman, Eleonora Gracia, 46, received a seven-year sentence for attempting to smuggle 0.5 pounds of cocaine into Bali.
Authorities allege that she handed over the drugs to Elliot James Shaw, a 50-year-old British man, during a sting operation at a local hotel.Indonesia has been known to impose severe punishments for drug-related crimes, including the death penalty.
Currently, there are about 530 individuals on death row in Indonesia, with 96 foreigners among them.
Since 2017, the country has upheld a moratorium on executions.
