Indonesia's Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki Erupts, Spewing Ash 10km into the Sky
The eruption has prompted authorities to raise the alert system to its highest level and evacuate nearby residents.
Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in Indonesia erupted on Wednesday, sending volcanic ash 10 kilometers (6.21 miles) into the sky.
The Geological Agency reported that the volcano erupted for around nine minutes at approximately 1:35 a.m. local time (Tuesday 1835 GMT).
An earlier eruption occurred two hours prior, spewing ash 9 kilometers into the air.
The agency raised its alert level to the highest point after recording significant volcanic activity since Monday.
Located in East Nusa Tenggara province, authorities have urged people living near the volcano to be aware of potential volcanic mudflows if heavy rain occurs.
A six- to seven-kilometer area around the site has been cleared as a precautionary measure.
The volcano last erupted in August and also experienced an eruption in July, causing flight disruptions to and from nearby Bali.
In November 2024, Lewotobi Laki-laki's major eruption resulted in the deaths of 10 people and damaged thousands of houses.
Following this event, dozens of residents living in nearby villages were evacuated.
The government has temporarily closed Fransiskus Xaverius Seda airport in Maumere, East Nusa Tenggara province, until Thursday.
