Costa Rica aims to gradually reopen airports to revive tourism
Costa Rica aspires to a "gradual and safe" reopening for the arrival of international flights that will allow it to resume the activity of its tourism sector, depressed by the measures against Covid-19 , the new Minister of Tourism, Gustavo Segura, announced this Wednesday.
The return of international flights, closed since March after the appearance of the new coronavirus in the country, is one of the axes of work that Segura announced after his appointment as head of that portfolio.
President Carlos Alvarado reported on Wednesday the appointment of Segura to replace María Amalia Revelo, who resigned due to health problems.
Tourism is one of the main economic engines of this Central American country of 5 million inhabitants, which received in 2019 more than 3 million foreign visitors.
However, global containment by the new coronavirus caused the closure of borders, hotels, restaurants and bars, and made the tourism sector one of the main victims of the pandemic.
Given this, Segura raised among the lines of work of the ministry in charge, starting with "the opening of international flights gradually and safely."
He also cited the adoption of measures to alleviate the financial problems of tourism companies and the economic revival of the sector.
Very soon I will make myself available to the chambers and organizations in the sector to generate the appropriate formal communication channels, Segura said.
The new minister is an economist with experience in sustainable tourism and hotel management.
