Grandson of Winston Churchill and Conservative peer Nicholas Soames has called for the UK to stop arms sales to Israel following the killing of three British aid workers in Gaza.
His statement comes after a letter from over 500 senior lawyers and judges, including three former Supreme Court justices, accusing the British government of violating international law by continuing to arm Israel and threatening to suspend aid to UNRWA.
The letter urges the UK to uphold its obligations under international law and send a strong message against Israel's actions in Palestinian territory.
Soames expressed his belief that it's time for the UK to stop selling arms to Israel due to the ongoing disasters in the region.
He acknowledged Israel's right to fight Hamas but expressed sadness and concern over the killing of seven aid workers in an Israeli airstrike, which he deemed inexcusable and in need of explanation from Israel.
The UK's arms supply to Israel is described as small, mainly consisting of parts.
Halting exports would send a message, according to Soames.
Several Conservative politicians, including Hugo Swire, David Jones, Paul Bristow, and Flick Drummond, have called for a halt to arms sales to Israel due to humanitarian concerns for Palestinians.
Former Conservative minister Alan Duncan is under investigation for accusing pro-Israel lobbyists within the party, such as Eric Pickles and Stuart Polak, of putting foreign interests above international law.
Duncan believes Israel's actions in Gaza are morally unacceptable and do not follow international law.
The speaker, Duncan, accused the Conservative Friends of Israel (CFI) in the UK of supporting illegal settlers in the West Bank, leading to land theft and the origin of conflicts between Israelis and Palestinians.
He criticized some UK politicians for refusing to condemn settlements and called for the identification and removal of extremists in parliament who are influencing Prime Minister Rishi Sunak with poor advice on the issue.
A Conservative MP, Duncan, called for the removal of Lord Polak from the House of Lords for prioritizing another country's interests over the UK's in Parliament.
Lord Polak is the head of the Conservative Friends of Israel.
Duncan's comments on LBC radio were under investigation by the Conservative party.
Duncan also labeled several Tory MPs and ministers, including Michael Gove, Oliver Dowden, Suella Braverman, Robert Jenrick, and
Priti Patel, as "extremists" for not condemning Israeli settlements on Palestinian land.
He demanded the withdrawal of the whip from Suella Braverman for downplaying the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
