Apple Unveils Vision Pro: $3,499 Mixed-Reality Headset with Dedicated App Store
Apple has unveiled the Vision Pro, a mixed-reality headset, at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference.
The headset resembles high-tech ski goggles and will have its own operating system and a dedicated App Store.
It will be priced at $3,499 and will be available early next year in the US, followed by other regions later.
The Vision Pro is the latest of what Apple hopes is a groundbreaking new product that can help the tech titan keep sales growing.
It will attempt to redefine a still-nascent industry in the same vein as the Mac, iPod, iPhone, and iPad.
The difference this time is Apple is launching with a lofty price - and jumping into a market that hasn't resonated with consumers.
On June 7, Apple announced the release of its new Vision Pro headset.
The device is designed to be used for both augmented and virtual reality experiences, and includes a digital crown for switching between the two modes.
The headset has two main chips, an M2 processor from the Mac and a second chip called the R1, which is dedicated to mixed reality capabilities.
Apple expects to sell around 900,000 units of the Vision Pro in its first year, which could give the company a significant share of the market.
The device is highly advanced, with dual 4K microLED displays, the ability to take 3D photos and videos, and 12 cameras.
It also has an external battery pack with two hours of life, or can be plugged in for all-day use.
The launch of the Vision Pro sets up a showdown with Meta Platforms Inc., which currently holds 81% of the VR headset market, according to Counterpoint Research.
Disney CEO Bob Iger also announced that the Disney+ streaming service would be available on the Vision Pro when it launches.
Other content providers, such as Netflix and Zoom Video Communications, will also be able to create their own apps for the device.
Apple is already working on a lower-cost version of the headset and an even more upscale model.
