Microsoft retires PowerShell 2.0 and WMIC over security risks
Microsoft’s September 2025 update for Windows 11 quietly removed PowerShell 2.0 and the Windows Management Instrumentation Command-line tool, known as WMIC.
The company said both were outdated and carried security concerns.
Users are advised to upgrade to the latest version of PowerShell, which incorporates modern management features previously split across the two tools.
