KAUST and Taara at X Successfully Test Wireless Laser Optics System in Red Sea
King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) and Taara at X, a "moonshot factory", have successfully tested a wireless "network-in-the-box" laser optics system in the Red Sea, which could lead to the deployment of low-cost, high-speed internet in Saudi Arabia.
The technology, known as Free Space Optics (FSO), uses lasers to transmit video, voice, and data at high speeds, but requires weather monitoring to ensure optimal performance.
The successful test established a 20 Gbps connection between KAUST and a small island 2 km away, and the technology has the potential to bring life-changing benefits to unconnected rural areas and isolated maritime locations.
