UN Chief Calls for End to Ceasefire Violations in Gaza
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urges adherence to ceasefire and peace agreement in the Palestinian territory.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed deep concern over the ongoing violations of the ceasefire in Gaza, emphasizing the need for all parties to uphold the decisions made during the first phase of the peace agreement.
The ceasefire, which halted two years of devastating conflict in the region, is facing challenges as reports of breaches continue to emerge. The situation remains tense as Israel handed over 45 Palestinian bodies on Monday, according to the Red Cross.
This move follows the return of three Israeli hostages by militant groups, including Hamas, the previous day.
The Israeli authorities confirmed that the three were soldiers who lost their lives during the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led attack that sparked the war in Gaza.
In response, Hamas' armed wing claimed to have found the body of an Israeli soldier held hostage in the Shejaia area, still occupied by Israeli forces. For each Israeli hostage returned, Israel has been releasing the remains of 15 Palestinians since the start of the ceasefire.
As of Monday, a total of 270 Palestinian bodies have been handed back, though only 78 have been identified thus far.
The identification process is complicated due to a lack of DNA testing kits available in Gaza.
The Health Ministry in Gaza posts photographs of the remains online in an attempt to assist families in identifying their loved ones.In another development rocking Israel, a political scandal involving former military legal chief Maj. Gen. Yifat Tomer-Yerushalmi has come to light.
She admitted to leaking a video that shows Israeli soldiers assaulting a Palestinian detainee and subsequently resigned from her position.
The court hearing held on Monday resulted in an extension of her detention until Wednesday, with the judge citing suspicions of fraud, breach of trust, and obstruction of justice.
Investigations are ongoing, with Tomer-Yerushalmi currently being held at a women's prison in central Israel.
