UAE Pledges Withdrawal of Remaining Forces from Yemen Amid Rift with Saudi Arabia

UAE Pledges Withdrawal of Remaining Forces from Yemen Amid Rift with Saudi Arabia

Abu Dhabi signals a decisive shift in Yemen strategy as tensions with Riyadh intensify over the future of the conflict
The United Arab Emirates has announced its intention to withdraw its remaining military forces from Yemen, a move that underscores a deepening rift with Saudi Arabia and marks a significant turning point in the long-running conflict.

The pledge comes amid escalating tensions between the two Gulf powers, whose diverging objectives in Yemen have increasingly strained what was once a close strategic partnership.

UAE officials said the decision reflects a recalibration of priorities, emphasising de-escalation and a transition away from direct military involvement.

Abu Dhabi has argued that its core security objectives in Yemen, including countering extremist groups and safeguarding key maritime routes, have largely been achieved through local partnerships and years of engagement.

The withdrawal pledge is intended to reinforce the UAE’s position that a sustainable political settlement, rather than continued foreign military presence, is essential for Yemen’s future stability.

Saudi Arabia, which remains more deeply engaged militarily, has taken a different approach, prioritising border security and support for the internationally recognised Yemeni government.

The divergence has fuelled tensions, particularly in southern Yemen, where factions backed by Riyadh and Abu Dhabi have clashed as they compete for influence over territory and institutions.

Regional analysts say the UAE’s move could further complicate Saudi efforts to consolidate a unified front in peace negotiations.

Despite the friction, Emirati officials have stressed that the withdrawal does not signal disengagement from Yemen altogether.

Abu Dhabi intends to continue diplomatic, humanitarian and development efforts, while maintaining security cooperation through local allies.

The UAE has also reiterated support for international mediation initiatives aimed at ending the conflict and alleviating Yemen’s humanitarian crisis.

The announcement adds a new layer of uncertainty to an already fragile situation, as regional and international actors assess how the UAE’s exit will reshape the balance of power on the ground.

With Saudi Arabia pursuing its own diplomatic track to reduce hostilities, the coming months are likely to test whether rival strategies among former allies can be reconciled in pursuit of lasting peace.
