Explosions rock central Kabul amid ongoing border clashes and escalating tensions between Afghanistan and neighboring Pakistan.
KABUL: Two explosions were heard in central Kabul on Wednesday evening, according to multiple sources.
The incidents occurred amid heightened tensions between
Afghanistan and its neighbor, Pakistan, which have seen a surge in violence over the past week.
Taliban government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid attributed the blasts to an oil tanker and a generator explosion that sparked fires within the city limits of the Afghan capital.
Eyewitnesses reported seeing ambulances navigating through the streets, while security forces affiliated with the Taliban were observed cordoning off the central area in an apparent effort to secure the scene.
The explosions resulted in plumes of black smoke billowing into the sky and left the ground littered with shattered glass from buildings that sustained damage due to the blasts.
These incidents come on the heels of two previous explosions last Thursday near Kabul, which prompted a series of border clashes involving both military and civilian casualties as claimed by officials from both countries involved in the conflict.
The situation has been further complicated by longstanding accusations from Pakistan that
Afghanistan harbors militant groups, including the Pakistani Taliban Tehreek-e-Taliban (TTP), on its territory.
However, these claims have consistently been denied by Afghan authorities.
