US President Donald Trump endorses Rep. Julia Letlow over Sen. Bill Cassidy in Louisiana's Republican primary, setting the stage for a heated political battle.
In an unusual move that highlights his growing influence within the Republican Party, US President
Donald Trump has thrown his weight behind Rep. Julia Letlow (R-Louisiana) in her challenge against incumbent Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-Louisiana) in the state's upcoming Republican primary.
The contest, set for Saturday, marks the latest instance of Trump attempting to purge party ranks of officials he deems disloyal.
Cassidy, who faced censure from Trump after voting to convict him in his second impeachment trial following the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol, finds himself in a precarious political position.
His decision to support Health Secretary Robert F.
Kennedy Jr., despite reservations over Kennedy's anti-
vaccine views, has further strained his relationship with the president.
Trump's endorsement of Letlow, who served as a college administrator before her election to the House, comes after she expressed support for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives—a stance at odds with Trump's own efforts to root out such programs from the federal government.
The president has been vocal in his criticism of Cassidy, labeling him "a disloyal disaster" and warning that he will be "CLOBBERED" by voters, describing Letlow as "a winner who will NEVER let you down".
The primary has been further complicated by a recent US Supreme Court decision concerning the Voting Rights Act.
This ruling led to the postponement of Louisiana's House primaries until a future date, creating confusion among voters.
The Senate primary, however, is moving forward, setting the stage for what could be a contentious electoral contest.
Cassidy's campaign has reportedly spent approximately $9.6 million on advertising through May 16, according to ad-tracking firm AdImpact.
Additionally, the Louisiana Freedom Fund, a super PAC supporting Cassidy, is expected to spend about $12.3 million.
In contrast, Letlow's campaign and her affiliated super PAC, the Accountability Project, have collectively spent around $9.9 million.
The outcome of this primary is widely seen as pivotal, with the winner almost certain to secure victory in the November general election given Louisiana's Republican leanings.
The battle between Cassidy and Letlow reflects broader tensions within the GOP, particularly regarding loyalty to Trump and the future direction of the party.
