President Donald Trump bestows the Presidential Medal of Freedom to slain activist and conservative movement leader Charlie Kirk, whose assassination has sparked debates over political violence.
President
Donald Trump awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor, to late activist Charlie Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA, during a Rose Garden ceremony on Tuesday.
The event honored Kirk's contributions to the conservative movement before his assassination last month.
Kirk was shot on September 10 while speaking at an event at Utah Valley University, prompting national outcry and reigniting discussions about political violence.
Trump has leveraged Kirk’s assassination to galvanize his base and push for state measures against what he describes as ‘radical left extremism.’In response, the Trump administration has launched a broad crackdown on left-wing organizations, employing federal agencies such as the FBI, Department of Homeland Security, and IRS to investigate and disrupt groups accused of funding or organizing political violence.
Despite this, Trump downplays violence from right-wing groups, asserting that political violence primarily stems from the left.
Experts counter that political violence is bipartisan, with historically more attacks inspired by right-wing ideology. The ceremony attended by key Republican figures included Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Senators Ted Cruz, Mike Lee, Rick Scott, and House Speaker Mike
Johnson.
Kirk played a significant role in mobilizing young voters for Trump’s 2024 campaign, though his influence was marked by controversy over attacks on LGBTQ+ rights and civil rights.
Supporters view him as a champion of free speech, while critics argue he contributed to mainstreaming extreme views.Following Kirk's death, Trump characterized him as a ‘martyr for American freedom’ and pledged to continue his work at his memorial service.
Both the US House of Representatives and Senate passed resolutions declaring October 14 a 'National Day of Remembrance for Charlie Kirk.' Additionally, President Trump signed a proclamation designating October 14, 2025, which marks what would have been Kirk’s 32nd birthday, as a ‘National Day of Remembrance for Charlie Kirk.’
