May 11, 2026 - Syria's defense ministry reported that two soldiers were killed and others wounded in an attack by unidentified assailants in the country's northeast on Monday.

The incident occurred when a military bus came under gunfire along the highway between Ras Al-Ain in Hasakah province and Ain Issa in Raqqa province.

According to a military source, two soldiers lost their lives, while two others sustained injuries during the attack.

The government of Syria has recently expanded its control over parts of the north and northeast regions, previously held by Kurdish-led forces.

These areas include locations near where Monday's attack took place.

Additionally, Syria has officially joined the international coalition against the Daesh group, which has a history of launching attacks in these regions.

Following the territorial defeat of Daesh in 2019, with support from a US-led coalition and Kurdish-led forces, the terrorist group lost control over vast territories in both Syria and Iraq.

Despite being defeated, Daesh maintains a presence in remote areas of Syria and continues to carry out attacks against Kurdish-led forces who previously controlled significant parts of the northeast.

In February, after government forces seized control of several areas formerly held by these forces, Daesh called on its members to resist the new authorities.

Shortly thereafter, state media reported that four Syrian security personnel were killed in an IS attack in Raqqa, a city recently reclaimed by Damascus's forces.
