Saudi Music Memory Initiative: Preserving the Kingdom's Musical Heritage through Open Meetings and Documentation
The Music Commission held an open virtual meeting to engage music enthusiasts and professionals in preserving Saudi Arabia's musical heritage through the Saudi Music Memory initiative.
The goal is to document and archive music and lyrics composed by Saudi artists up until the mid-1980s.
The initiative has already secured rights for over 5,000 works, documented 305 musical notations, and produced two musical notation books.
The first book, "From the Memory of National Songs," was released in celebration of this year's Founding Day.
The second book in a series, "From the Memory of Ramadan Songs," is nearing publication before Ramadan 2025.
A meeting was held with famous Saudi musicians like Mohammed Abdu, Abadi Al-Johar, and Jamil Mahmoud, who discussed the history of Saudi music and its pioneers.
The initiative's stages include securing rights to classical works, currently completed; transcribing musical works, in progress; creating documentary content and distributing significant works, planned for the upcoming year; and building an integrated platform, to be finished after these steps.
The commission follows a scientific methodology to ensure honesty and neutrality in all outputs.
The text describes the Saudi Music Memory initiative, which aims to document the history of Saudi art by eliminating biases and following guidelines from the Ministry of Culture.
The project conducts a comprehensive inventory of relevant materials and information, and its goals include creating a reliable reference, highlighting regional influence, providing academically documented research, and showcasing underappreciated musical works.
