Saudi Leaders Offer Condolences After Sudan Landslide
King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman extended deepest sympathies to the President of Sudan's Transitional Sovereignty Council and affected families.
Riyadh: Saudi Arabia’s King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman offered condolences early Wednesday following a landslide in Sudan that resulted in over a thousand fatalities.
The incident occurred on Sunday in the remote Jebel Marra range, specifically within the village of Tarasin in Darfur.
Sudanese authorities, as well as representatives from the United Nations (UN) and various aid groups, have been deployed to the affected area for support efforts.
The landslide destroyed the entire village after heavy rainfall, according to statements from the rebel group that governs the region.
In their expressions of condolence, King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed extended their deepest sympathies to General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, President of Sudan’s Transitional Sovereignty Council, as well as the families of those who lost their lives in the disaster.
They also wished a swift recovery for the injured.
The Sudan Liberation Movement/Army, which has control over an autonomous portion of Jebel Marra, called upon the United Nations and international aid organizations to assist with the collection of deceased bodies, including men, women, and children.
Luca Renda, the UN humanitarian coordinator in Sudan, stated that the organization, along with its humanitarian partners, is mobilizing resources to support those affected by the landslide.
The death toll is estimated to range between 300-1000 individuals.
The response from both regional authorities and international organizations reflects a coordinated effort to address this devastating disaster’s impact on the local population.
