Israel's military assault on Gaza over the last 13 months has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths, widespread displacement, a hunger crisis, and allegations of genocide at the World Court, which Israel denies. The operation is described by Israel as a necessary measure to eliminate the Hamas terror organization following their horrific terror attack on Israeli soil on October 7.
At a summit of Muslim and Arab leaders, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman sharply criticized Israel's actions against Palestinians, labeling them as "genocide."
This strong condemnation reflects an escalation in rhetoric from one of the Arab world's most influential leaders, who is also respected by President-elect
Donald Trump.
The Crown Prince reiterated that Saudi Arabia would not recognize Israel without the establishment of a Palestinian state.
During his address, the Crown Prince also called for the international community to prevent further Israeli actions against Iran and to uphold Iran's sovereignty. These comments came amid stalled efforts by the US to broker a normalization accord between Saudi Arabia and Israel, which were derailed following recent conflicts involving Hamas and Israel's retaliatory strikes.
Further escalating the situation, Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit indicated at the summit that there could be a push to freeze Israel's membership in the U.N.
General Assembly. He highlighted that this action does not fall under the Security Council's purview and could be decided by a majority in the General Assembly.
The summit concluded with a strong declaration, urging all nations to halt weapon and ammunition exports to Israel and calling on the International Criminal Court to issue arrest warrants for Israeli civilian and military officials implicated in the ongoing conflict.
