Saudi Arabia to host international workshop on monitoring, forecasting climate change

Saudi Arabia is hosting next Wednesday a two-day international workshop themed "Regional Capacities for Monitoring and Forecasting Climate Change", which will be held at the Hilton Hotel in Jeddah with the participation of 21 countries and six international organizations, as well as official and relevant authorities in the Kingdom.
The workshop aims at promoting the potential of the Kingdom's Climate Change Center (CCC), as well as discussing and reviewing the latest international developments on climate change and forecasting.

The CEO of the National Center for Meteorology and Supervisor General of CCC Dr. Ayman Ghulam explained that the workshop's agenda will review several important topics, including; research and development of current climate surveillance and understanding plans and forecasting of future changes.

The agenda will identifying research and monitoring gaps that contribute to assisting the development of research strategies and supporting climate research, used techniques and operations activities in the region by bringing together scientists and researchers, including local and international climate change experts to discuss and exchange ideas.

He noted that the Regional Centre for Climate Change would contribute to supporting decision-makers and policymakers on climate change and ways to deal with it, in addition to research and development in modeling and climate forecasting on seasonal and climate time scales and review the results of recent research on the region's climate, changes and strategic and future research trends on the region's climate.

Ghulam also referred to the Regional Centre for Climate Change's endeavor to develop a framework for the exchange of climate information and data at the regional level in addition to identifying data gaps and designing strategies to improve regional climate observation.

The Regional Centre for Climate Change was established as part of a series of initiatives announced by Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed Bin Salman in mid-2022 at the Middle East Green Summit.

It was mandated with gathering and participating in climate research to study the impact of weather on forestation resulting from Saudi Green Initiatives and studying renewable energy resources to measure their impacts on carbon emissions under future climate change, helping to develop climate information to boost the Kingdom's contribution plans at the national, regional and international levels.
