Saudi Arabia signs drone development deal with telecom giant
The Kuwaiti company has a drone subsidiary and the new partnership could help Saudi Arabia further diversify its economy away from oil.
Saudi Arabia signed an agreement today on developing drone technology with a leading regional telecommunications company.
King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology signed the memorandum of understanding with Zain Saudi Arabia. The two will work on research and development of drone systems, the official Saudi Press Agency reported.
King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology is a public Saudi organization dedicated to scientific and technological research. Zain Group is a Kuwaiti telecommunications company that offers cell phone service and internet packages throughout the Middle East.
It is unclear what exactly the two will work on with regard to drones. The Saudi Press Agency's report mentioned marketing, monitoring and exchanging expertise.
Zain has a subsidiary dedicated to drones that is aptly named Zain Drone. It provides an array of services including crop irrigation, surveillance and mapping. In 2020, Kuwait’s Public Authority of Industry contracted Zain Drone to conduct an aerial topographical survey of industrial sites in the Gulf state, according to the company’s website.
King Abdulaziz City and Zain signed the memorandum at the LEAP technology forum currently meeting in Riyadh.
Saudi Arabia is working to diversify its economy and reduce its dependence on oil. To this end, the country announced yesterday a new $6.4 billion investment in blockchain, metaverse and other futuristic technologies. This announcement was also made at the LEAP forum.
