Saudi Arabia's Industrial Heritage Site JAX District Transforms into Creative Arts Hub in Diriyah
Saudi Arabia's Heritage Commission has designated Diriyah's JAX District as an industrial heritage site.
Once an industrial area, the district is now a creative arts hub in Diriyah, home to the UNESCO world heritage site of At-Turaif.
The recognition of its past industrial role is part of the Industrial Heritage Preservation Program to protect and celebrate historically significant industrial sites in the Kingdom.
The designation highlights the district's unique industrial architecture and places it among other recognized sites in the country that contributed to the evolution of industry and shaping Saudi society.
JAX, an industrial area in Riyadh named after the company that established it in the 1970s, has been granted heritage site status due to its historical significance as a large-scale industrial center.
Abandoned warehouses in JAX were transformed into makeshift studios for graffiti artists in the mid-2000s.
This led to the establishment of creative spaces, including art galleries, studios, cafes, and offices for creative agencies.
JAX is now a national cultural landmark, celebrating its industrial past while promoting contemporary art and creativity.
The JAX District in Saudi Arabia is now home to various events such as the Diriyah Contemporary Art Biennale, MDLBEAST XP Music Futures, Hia Hub fashion, beauty and style conference, and Noor Riyadh light art festival.
Additionally, the Saudi Arabia Museum of Contemporary Art, the first museum of contemporary art in the Kingdom, is situated in the district.
