Al-Jubeir made this statement during a high-level event on Action for the Oceans in San Jose,
Costa Rica, which aims to prepare for the 3rd UN Ocean Conference in 2025.
The conference discussed topics such as the ocean's carbon dioxide absorption capacity, sustainable fishing, and combating marine pollution.
Saudi Arabia's Climate Envoy, Adel Al-Jubeir, attended the High Level Event on Ocean Action in
Costa Rica and spoke about Saudi Arabia's involvement in international negotiations.
The country played a role in creating a legally binding agreement for the sustainable use of marine biological diversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction.
Al-Jubeir also mentioned Saudi Arabia's participation in negotiations for a legally binding instrument on plastic pollution that covers the marine environment.
Additionally, the Saudi Green Initiative, part of Saudi Vision 2030, aims to protect 30 percent of the Kingdom's terrestrial and marine areas by 2030.
Saudi Arabia, during its presidency of the G20 in 2020, initiated a global platform to advance coral reef research and development, complementing international efforts to safeguard the marine environment.
The Kingdom is also dedicated to protecting marine and coastal ecosystems in the Red Sea and has launched the General Foundation for the Conservation of Coral Reefs and Turtles.
