EU Diplomat Kallas' Proposed Actions Against Israel Face Skepticism Among Member States
A list of 10 options for EU response to Israel's actions in Gaza faces resistance from EU member states.
The European Union's top diplomat, Kaja Kallas, is preparing to present a comprehensive list of 10 potential measures the EU could take against Israel in response to its actions in Gaza.
However, according to EU diplomats who spoke with Euronews, there is limited enthusiasm among member states for taking any action against Tel Aviv.
The proposed measures include suspending visa-free travel and blocking imports from Israeli settlements in the West Bank, as outlined in a document issued by Kallas' office.
These proposals vary in their requirements for adoption, ranging from unanimous support to a qualified majority vote.
Some EU member states are hesitant to support these options due to ongoing divisions within the bloc and concerns about the potential impact on the recent agreement aimed at improving humanitarian aid access to Gaza.
The effectiveness of these measures is contingent upon Israel's compliance with the new agreement brokered by Kallas, which has yet to produce tangible results despite ongoing Israeli airstrikes and the blockade.
