Saudi Arabia Pushes for BRICS Cooperation Amid Global Crises: Regional Tensions and Economic Challenges Unfold

Saudi Arabia seeks stronger ties with BRICS amidst condemnation of violence in the Middle East; regional economic and humanitarian challenges escalate.
Starting with a call for global unity, Saudi Arabia at the BRICS Plus 2024 Summit in Russia emphasized its intent to deepen cooperation with BRICS nations despite not being an official member, stressing significant trade figures of $196 billion with these countries, while condemning Israel's actions in Gaza, advocating for a peaceful resolution.

Meanwhile, in Lebanon, Israeli air raids have inflicted widespread devastation, targeting residential areas resulting in significant casualties, and displacing over a million people as tensions with Hezbollah escalate, with both sides exchanging attacks amidst massive infrastructural damage.

In neighboring Yemen, amid a currency crisis that sees the riyal plummeting to a record low, the government has launched an Economic Rescue Plan to tackle corruption and stabilize the economy, seeking international support and auctioning foreign currency reserves to ease the humanitarian strain.

Turning our attention to Europe, Greece is urging Turkiye to crack down on smuggling as asylum seeker numbers surge, with over 37,000 crossings since January 2024; discussions between Greek and Turkish officials are planned to address this ongoing issue, which is complicated by delays in new Greek asylum facility constructions due to local opposition.

In Egypt, the IMF has highlighted the need for improved social protection within its $8 billion loan program, as regional conflicts, including reduced Suez Canal revenues, put pressure on the economy; the IMF aims to collaborate closely with Egyptian authorities to enhance reform commitments.

Lastly, in a move towards stronger industrial cooperation, Saudi Arabia and Tunisia are forging new partnerships in sectors such as automotive components and energy, aiming to foster regional collaboration, with Saudi officials noting ongoing discussions that may expand this cooperation to include other Arab nations.
