Russian Forces Advance Towards Chasiv Yar: Kyiv Braces for Important Battle in East Amid Power Plant Attacks

Russia is attempting to capture the town of Chasiv Yar in eastern Ukraine by May 9, according to Ukraine's top commander, Col. General Oleksandr Syrskyi.
The fall of Chasiv Yar, which is west of Bakhmut and lies 5-10 kilometers from the city, would indicate growing Russian battlefield momentum and could lead to an important battle for control of high ground.

Kyiv is facing a slowdown in Western military aid.

Russia is focusing its efforts on Chasiv Yar before potentially moving toward Kramatorsk.

Chasiv Yar was devastated during months of fighting last year, and was eventually captured by Russian forces.

The Ukrainian military is holding back Russian assaults near Chasiv Yar, with reinforcements including ammunition, drones, and electronic warfare devices.

The threat of Russian capture of Chasiv Yar remains relevant, as Russian forces have been ordered to do so by May 9 for the country's military parade.

Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov described the situation on the eastern front as tense, with Russia trying to advance west of Bakhmut.

Despite numerical superiority, Ukrainian forces are effectively disrupting Russian plans due to the courage and professionalism of the defenders.

Russia marks May 9 with a military parade and the election of President Vladimir Putin to a new six-year term.

Russia has increased attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure, striking three power plants and substations in recent weeks.

President Volodymyr Zelensky has warned of a potential big offensive from Russia, likely in late spring or summer, with the focus on the Donetsk region.

Ukraine has retaliated with domestically-produced long-range drones, targeting Russian oil facilities.

The energy system was already weakened during the first winter of the war, raising concerns over its resilience.

Ukraine is experiencing manpower issues and a shortage of artillery shells.

The town of Chasiv Yar, located on defensible high ground in the Donetsk region, is expected to be a significant battleground in Russia's summer offensive.

Russian forces have reached the canal surrounding the town, and taking it could allow for a faster advance into the region.

Immediate delivery of ammunition could be crucial for Ukraine's defense.
