Washington, United States: US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is en route to Beijing with President
Donald Trump despite being under Chinese sanctions.
This breakthrough appears to have been made possible after China changed the transliteration of his name.
As a US senator, Rubio, now aged 54 and visiting China for the first time, was a staunch advocate for human rights in China.
In response, China imposed sanctions on him twice, employing a tactic typically reserved for adversaries by the United States.
China found a diplomatic solution following Trump's nomination of Rubio as Secretary of State.
Prior to his inauguration in January 2025, Chinese authorities and official media began using a different character for "lu" in his surname's transliteration.
Sources indicate that China made this change due to the sanctions imposed on Rubio under the previous name spelling, which included an entry ban.
The Chinese embassy has not yet responded to a request for comment.
A State Department official confirmed only that Rubio is traveling with Trump.
Rubio was observed boarding Air Force One at Andrews Air Force Base.
Rubio, a Cuban-American opposed to communism, authored congressional legislation imposing broad sanctions on China in response to allegations of forced labor against the Uyghur minority and Beijing's crackdown in Hong Kong.
During his confirmation hearing as Secretary of State, he emphasized that China poses an unprecedented threat.
However, since taking office, Rubio has supported Trump's policies, which prioritize trade relations with China while downplaying human rights concerns.
Last year, Rubio provided support to Taiwan by stating that the US administration would not negotiate over its future in exchange for securing a trade deal with China.
