Portugal's new prime minister, Luis Montenegro, stated on Monday that Portugal will not recognize a Palestinian state without the EU's collective approach.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, who has been advocating for Palestinian statehood recognition, was seeking Portuguese support during their meeting in Madrid.
Montenegro emphasized that Portugal believes in a multilateral approach to recognizing a Palestinian state within the EU and the UN.
Leaders of Spain and Portugal, Pedro Sanchez and
António Costa, condemned Iran's missile attack on Israel and called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.
Sanchez stated that two paths are available: one leading to war escalation and the other to a ceasefire followed by peace negotiations.
Spain, along with Ireland, Malta, and Slovenia, expressed their readiness to recognize Palestine when the circumstances permit.
Sanchez also mentioned that Spain could officially recognize Palestine by the end of June this year.
