Pope Francis offers refuge to Myanmar's Aung San Suu Kyi at the Vatican amidst ongoing turmoil.
Pope Francis has offered refuge at the Vatican to Myanmar's detained former leader Aung San Suu Kyi, currently serving a 27-year prison sentence. During his trip to Asia, he met with Suu Kyi's son to address Myanmar's turmoil following the 2021 military coup, where Suu Kyi was arrested despite winning the 2015 elections, though she later faced criticism over the treatment of the Rohingya minority.

Meanwhile, China has denied allegations of psychological torture made by former Canadian diplomat Michael Kovrig, who, along with Michael Spavor, was detained from 2018 to 2021 amid tensions over the arrest of Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou. Although Kovrig described enduring solitary confinement and relentless interrogation, Chinese authorities refuted these claims, emphasizing the rule of law and calling for respect for the facts.

In business news, MAGRABi Retail Group and Rivoli Vision have announced a merger set to revolutionize the Middle East eyewear market with a focus on innovation and customer experience. MAGRABi will acquire 89 Rivoli Vision stores across several nations, aiming for significant revenue growth and technological advancements by 2027.

Moving to economic developments, Ajman's exports to Saudi Arabia surged by 29% in 2023, with impressive growth continuing into 2024, reflecting a $17.53 billion trade volume between the UAE and Saudi Arabia in the first half of the year. This significant increase also highlights rising Saudi investments in Ajman.

On the international front, Saudi Minister of Foreign Affairs Prince Faisal bin Farhan joined the Arab League Council in New York to address the escalating tensions in Gaza and Lebanon. The council's meeting at the UN General Assembly underscored the urgent need for coordination to halt military escalations in the region.

Finally, in the US, Ryan Routh from North Carolina was arrested for an alleged assassination attempt on Donald Trump near his Florida golf course. Routh, found with firearms and a list of Trump's public appearances, faces serious charges and remains in custody without bail pending trial.
