An explosion at the La Ciscuda mine in Colombia's Cundinamarca province has resulted in nine fatalities and six injuries, according to the national mining agency.
BOGOTA: A coal mine explosion in Colombia’s Cundinamarca province killed nine workers and left six others injured, the national mining agency reported on Monday.
The incident occurred at the La Ciscuda mine, which is operated by Carbonera Los Pinos.
Attempts to reach the company for comment were initially unsuccessful.
The mining agency stated that the accident appeared to be caused by a buildup of gases, emphasizing recommendations made during an inspection visit on April 9, where the presence of hazardous gases such as methane was identified.
The agency warned about potential accumulations of methane and coal dust in its statement, which it had previously noted during safety assessments.
The six survivors were transported to a regional hospital for medical treatment.
Colombia has seen numerous serious accidents at open-pit and subterranean coal and gold mines, particularly in operations lacking proper safety measures or functioning outside legal boundaries.
