Japan Considers Sanctions on UAE-Based Entities for Aiding Russia
Japan is considering sanctions against organizations in several countries, including the United Arab Emirates, for aiding Russia. This follows a U.S. decision to sanction over 300 firms and individuals in countries such as China and South Africa. Japanese Foreign Minister Kamikawa Yoko emphasized Japan's commitment to responding to sanction circumventions while expressing deep concern over Gaza's humanitarian situation without committing to sanctions against Israel.
On June 14, 2024, Japanese Foreign Minister Kamikawa Yoko announced that Japan is considering imposing sanctions against organizations in third countries, including the United Arab Emirates, for aiding Russia in the Ukraine conflict.
This move comes after the United States reimposed sanctions on over 300 firms and individuals in various countries such as China, South Africa, and Turkiye.
Kamikawa emphasized the importance of responding to attempts to circumvent sanctions against Russia and noted that Japan is planning new sanctions packages that include nations like China, India, Uzbekistan, and Kazakhstan.
While Japan is not targeting any specific state, it aims to address entities contravening sanctions.
On another matter, Kamikawa expressed deep concern over the humanitarian situation in Gaza but was non-committal about sanctions against Israel, urging instead for adherence to international humanitarian law and a sustainable ceasefire in the region.
