Israeli Drone Strike in Lebanon: Mohammad Assaf Survives Attack, Syrian Civilian Killed
An Israeli drone strike in eastern Lebanon targeted Mohammad Assaf, a Lebanese official from the Hamas-allied group Jamaa Islamiya, near the village of Suwairi in the Bekaa Valley on Sunday.
The attack killed a Syrian civilian in his vehicle.
Assaf survived the attempt on his life.
Lebanon's National News Agency initially reported that a Hamas official was the intended target.
Since the October 7 attack by Gaza militants on Israel, Israel and Hezbollah, an ally of Hamas, have been exchanging near-daily fire along the Israeli-Lebanese border.
Israel has also targeted Hezbollah and Hamas officials in Lebanon, including a strike that killed Hamas's deputy leader Saleh Al-Aruri in a Hezbollah stronghold in southern Beirut.
Another strike in Baalbek, further north in the Bekaa Valley, wounded four people, including a Hezbollah member.
The first Israeli attack in nearly six months occurred in the Suwairi area, near Lebanon's border with Syria.
Since early October, cross-border violence between Lebanon and Israel has resulted in at least 326 deaths, primarily Hezbollah fighters but also 57 civilians in Lebanon, according to AFP. In northern Israel, at least 10 soldiers and seven civilians have been killed.
Over 33,000 people have been displaced due to the violence in Lebanon's south and Israel's north.
