Israel-Hezbollah Tensions Surge with Airstrikes and Retaliations Amid Global Conflicts

Israel-Hezbollah clashes and Meryl Streep's UN criticism: Key global events on September 24, 2024.
In a shocking escalation, Israel launched airstrikes on Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon on September 24, 2024, resulting in nearly 500 casualties and causing tens of thousands to flee. In retaliation, Hezbollah attacked multiple Israeli military sites with Fadi rockets, marking a significant shift from Israel's previous focus on Hamas in Gaza to Hezbollah along the northern border.

Speaking of conflict, American actor Meryl Streep has criticized the Taliban's severe restrictions on Afghan women, declaring at the UN Assembly that a "squirrel has more rights" than a girl in Afghanistan. Streep emphasized the harsh bans on public parks, universities, and public singing, while UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres echoed the need for global support to fight gender discrimination in Afghanistan.

Meanwhile, Ukraine's presidential adviser Vladyslav Vlasiuk has revealed China's major role in supplying foreign components for Russian weapons, with around 60 percent coming from China. Despite Western sanctions, crucial parts for missiles, drones, and surveillance are still sourced from countries like the United States, the Netherlands, Japan, and Switzerland, underscoring China's pivotal involvement.

In another disturbing development, Swedish prosecutors have accused Iran's intelligence service of hacking an SMS operator in 2023 to send messages inciting revenge against Qur’an burners. Acting on behalf of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, this effort aimed to create division in Swedish society, straining relations between Sweden and several Middle Eastern countries and raising the nation's threat level.

Over in Germany, a major crackdown on a human smuggling network led to the arrest of four individuals during raids in Mannheim, Karlsruhe, and Worms. The operation involved 400 officers and targeted a network smuggling migrants from the Caucasus into Germany for underpaid labor, prompted by tighter government controls on irregular migration.

Finally, Ukraine endured massive Russian air strikes on the southern city of Zaporizhzhia, resulting in one death and six injuries, including two children. The attacks caused widespread damage to infrastructure and residential buildings, while Ukraine's air force managed to down 66 of the 81 drones launched by Russia, primarily targeting northern and central Ukraine.
