Ramadan Acquitted of Rape and Coercion Charges in Swiss Court
Tariq Ramadan, an Islamic scholar, was acquitted of rape and sexual coercion charges in a Swiss court on March 15th, 2023.
The plaintiff, a woman identified as "Brigitte," immediately stated she would appeal the decision.
The court found that the evidence presented did not support the accusations, and that the woman's account was "generally consistent" but not corroborated by any material evidence.
The court also awarded Ramadan compensation for his legal costs, but rejected his claim for moral damages.
Ramadan left the court smiling, with his lawyers saying the verdict was inspired by reason and that too many implausibilities and contradictions led to an acquittal.
The plaintiff's lawyers argued that the decision was the result of a "caricatural" hearing and that the word of their client was not respected.
