India's Dairy Farmer Prioritizes Family Cows Over Higher-Paying Job Amidst Methane Emissions Concerns

India's Dairy Farmer Prioritizes Family Cows Over Higher-Paying Job Amidst Methane Emissions Concerns

In India's Tamil Nadu state, Abinaya Tamilarasu, a 28-year-old commerce graduate, prioritizes caring for her family's cows and farming over a higher-paying job.
With over 80 million dairy farmers, India is the world's largest milk producer, contributing 303 million bovine cattle to methane emissions, making it the largest contributor in the country.

Despite the government's focus on renewable energy for emissions reduction, the dairy industry remains a significant source of methane.

Tamilarasu and her family cannot abandon farming, as it's deeply rooted in their way of life.

The text discusses the importance of reducing methane emissions, a potent greenhouse gas, to limit climate change.

India is the third largest methane emitter, with livestock being the primary source, responsible for about 48% of methane emissions in India.

The Indian government has not joined any global pledges to reduce methane emissions.

However, there are efforts on a national level, such as the National Dairy Development Board, which is exploring genetic improvement programs to make livestock more productive, reducing the need for each farmer to maintain as many cows to produce the same amount of milk.

Methane only stays in the atmosphere for about a dozen years, making it a promising area for quick climate solutions.

The NDDB (National Dairy Development Board) found that providing a balanced diet to animals can reduce emissions by up to 15 percent.

The board is exploring the possibility of using crops for animal feed instead of burning them to clear land.

Meenesh Shah, the board's chairman, emphasized the importance of "climate-smart dairying." Vineet Kumar from the Center for Science and Environment agreed, stating that high-quality feed can decrease emissions.

He also suggested promoting local breeds that emit less.

However, Thanammal Ravichandran, a veterinarian, pointed out that there is a feed shortage in India, causing farmers to give their cattle lower quality and higher emitting feed.

Farmers are also unable to afford better quality feed.

Dairy farmers in India require more government support to improve and affordably produce feed, according to a speaker.

Any measures to decrease methane emissions from livestock farming should not negatively impact farmers' livelihoods and should consider traditional farming practices.

Livestock is deeply integrated into Indian agriculture, and drastic changes could harm farmers.

Cow manure, used as fertilizer, should not be reduced as it emits less greenhouse gas than chemical fertilizers.

Energy analyst Bandish Patel suggests focusing on the energy sector to effectively reduce methane emissions.

The text discusses the emissions from agriculture and mining industries, with the speaker, Shah from NDDB, arguing that agriculture emissions are dispersed and harder to reduce compared to pointed sources in mining.

India's large cattle population, milk production, and rice export contribute significantly to agricultural methane emissions.

However, Shah maintains that India's agriculture sector emissions are relatively low due to the country's large population, resulting in low per capita emissions.

A dairy farmer named Tamilarasu is supportive of better practices and cow welfare but has no plans to abandon her cows for climate reasons.

A farmer intends to carry on with dairy farming indefinitely, believing that the well-being of her cows contributes to her own prosperity.

She expressed this viewpoint by stating, "We believe that our cows and us support each other.

If we can improve their lives, they will reciprocate and make ours better too."
