Imran Khan Granted Bail on Land Corruption Charges in Pakistan, Remains in Custody for Two Other Convictions
Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan was granted bail on corruption charges in Islamabad related to allegations of receiving illegal favors in exchange for land from a real estate developer.
However, he will remain in jail to serve time for two other convictions: leaking state secrets and violating Islamic law regarding his marriage.
Khan denies any wrongdoing.
Imran Khan, 71, has been in jail since last year after being convicted in four cases, with sentences suspended in two.
He is currently detained in a case related to the Al-Qadir Trust, a welfare organization he and his wife established while in office.
Prosecutors allege the trust was used as a front for Khan to receive land as a bribe from a developer.
Khan is also charged with inciting violence against the state following his removal from office in a 2022 parliamentary vote of no-confidence.
His wife, Bushra Bibi, is serving time in a separate case for unlawfully marrying Khan in 2018.
Imran Khan, the former prime minister of Pakistan, was granted bail in two corruption cases related to the acquisition of 60 acres of land near Islamabad and another plot near his mansion.
His media team stated that the land was intended for a "religious and scientific" educational institution and accused the filing of the cases as an attempt to keep Khan in prison and prevent him from participating in the Feb. 8 national elections.
Despite facing multiple convictions, Khan's party-backed candidates secured the most seats, but they lacked the numbers to form a government, which was led by an alliance of his rivals, including Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
