Agnes Forsthoffer reinstates the European Union flag at Hungary's parliament building, symbolizing a potential shift in political direction.
BUDAPEST - The newly appointed speaker of Hungary's parliament, Agnes Forsthoffer, ordered the European Union (EU) flag to be hung back on the building on Saturday, ending its long absence under the previous administration led by
Viktor Orban.
Orban was voted out of power nearly four weeks ago.Forsthoffer made this decision minutes after being elected by lawmakers to lead the incoming chamber.
In her first official act as Speaker of the House, she stated, "Let my first decision as Speaker of the House be the first symbolic step on this path (back to Europe).
I hereby order that, as of today, after 12 years, the flag of the European Union be returned to the Hungarian Parliament building".
This move signifies a possible shift in Hungary's political stance and its relationship with the EU.
Under Orban's rule, Hungary has been at odds with several EU policies and guidelines, leading to heightened tensions between Budapest and Brussels.
Forsthoffer's decision could indicate a potential re-engagement with European institutions and a move towards aligning more closely with EU norms and values.
