Hezbollah Launches Rocket Attacks on Israel in Retaliation for Killing of Senior Commander
Hezbollah, a Lebanese militant group supported by Iran, launched a barrage of rockets at Israeli military positions in retaliation for the killing of one of their members by Israel.
The attacks, which included Katyusha rockets and artillery shells, targeted the Meron base and a barrack.
Hezbollah stated that these attacks were in response to the assassination of their member by the Israeli enemy.
Israel and Hezbollah have been exchanging fire since October 7, when Hamas, an ally of Hezbollah, attacked southern Israel.
On Wednesday, sirens went off in Meron, Israel, but the army provided no further details.
The previous day, Hezbollah announced that one of their members, Hussein Makki, had been killed by Israeli fire.
The Israeli army confirmed the strike and identified Makki as a "senior field commander" responsible for planning and executing attacks against Israeli civilians and territory.
He previously commanded Hezbollah's forces in the coastal region.
Lebanon's National News Agency reported two people killed in an "enemy drone strike" near Tyre, but no connection to Makki's death was mentioned.
Hezbollah official, Hassan Makki, was reportedly killed in an Israeli airstrike in Lebanon, according to initial reports.
However, a later source close to Hezbollah told AFP that Makki was indeed killed but another person was injured instead.
The violence between Lebanon and Israel has resulted in the deaths of at least 412 people, including 79 civilians, and the displacement of tens of thousands.
Israel has reportedly lost 14 soldiers and 10 civilians in the conflict.
