Gunfire Targets Jewish School in Toronto as Anti-Semitic Incidents Surge Across Canada

Toronto Jewish school targeted by gunfire amid rising anti-Semitic incidents, prompting Prime Minister Trudeau to reaffirm Canada's stance against hate.
In a troubling development in Toronto, a Jewish school was hit by gunfire for the second time this year, amidst a surge in anti-Semitic incidents across Canada. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has voiced concern over this rising hostility, linking it to the war in Gaza and stressing Canada's commitment to combat anti-Semitism, with similar attacks reported at other Jewish institutions like a school in Montreal.

Meanwhile, former President Barack Obama is calling on Black men to vote in the upcoming election, addressing worries among Democrats about potential misogyny impacting Vice President Kamala Harris in close races such as Pennsylvania. Harris’ campaign is actively engaging Black male voters with initiatives focused on economic and social justice, aiming to counter misinformation and secure crucial support.

Turning to Yemen, UN agencies and NGOs are demanding the release of their staff detained by Houthi rebels under accusations of espionage. The claim, considered dubious by the UN, involves numerous detained personnel, some held since 2021, amidst a complex conflict that saw reduced fighting following a UN-brokered truce last year.

Across the globe, women in Turkey are rallying against gender violence after the recent femicide cases sparked nationwide protests. The demonstrations, extending from Istanbul to cities like Ankara and Izmir, criticize President Erdogan’s policies and underscore Turkiye's challenges with femicide, despite promises to reform the justice system following withdrawal from the Istanbul Convention.

In Lebanon, the tension between Israel and Hezbollah is escalating, resulting in airstrike warnings that have triggered massive displacements in areas with Hezbollah presence. Human rights groups criticize the tardiness and effectiveness of these warnings, noting that they contribute to unnecessary panic and displacement despite Israel's claim of mitigating civilian harm.

Lastly, the ongoing border clashes between Israel and Hezbollah are highlighting the challenges faced by the Lebanese army, which is struggling to intervene due to limited resources and a debilitating economic crisis. Although the US has offered military assistance, Lebanon's ability to counter Israeli military actions remains constrained, posing strategic and operational challenges for the country's defense forces.
