German Backpacker Found Alive After 12 Days Missing in Australian Outback
Australian authorities locate 26-year-old traveler safe and well after she vanished for almost two weeks.
SYDNEY: Australian authorities have located a 26-year-old German backpacker, Carolina Wilga, 'safe and well' after she had been missing in a remote part of the country's northwest for nearly two weeks.
Wilga disappeared on June 29 from near the outback town of Beacon, approximately 254 kilometers north of Perth, the state capital of Western Australia.
She was found by a passing motorist on a road in the region on Friday, as confirmed by police.
This outcome is considered a 'fantastic result' by Detective Jessica Securo during a media conference held in Perth, offering significant relief to Wilga's family and loved ones.
The backpacker was promptly airlifted to a Perth hospital where she remains stable, authorities noted.
During her ordeal, Wilga endured harsh conditions including being 'ravaged by mosquitoes,' resulting in exhaustion, dehydration, as well as cuts and bruises.
The search for Wilga began after her vehicle was discovered abandoned in the Wheatbelt region, an expansive area of 154,862 square kilometers known for its sparse population.
Once recovered, authorities stated that Wilga intended to continue her travels across Australia.
