Elon Musk Opposes Possible TikTok Ban in the United States
Elon Musk has voiced his opposition to the potential ban of the social networking service TikTok in the United States.
This comes as American lawmakers are gearing up for a weekend vote on legislation that could ultimately lead to the popular platform's prohibition.
In a post on the 'X' platform, which he acquired in late 2022, Musk stated, "In my opinion, TikTok should not be banned in the United States, even though such a ban could benefit the X platform." He further elaborated that "a decision like this contradicts the principle of free speech. This is not what the United States stands for."
Many U.S. officials consider TikTok, a platform that allows Beijing to spy on its users in the United States and manipulate them, to be a concern.
Today, the U.S. House of Representatives is set to vote on a package of aid for Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan, and on legislation concerning the social network.
Should the law come into effect, ByteDance, the Chinese company owning TikTok, would be forced to sell it within a few months or face a ban from the Apple and Google app stores in the United States.
A spokesperson for TikTok commented on Thursday, "It is regrettable that the House is using the pretext of significant foreign and humanitarian aid to pass a law that would violate the free speech rights of 170 million Americans," as reported by Agence France-Presse.
In comments posted under Musk's post on Friday, X users expressed their concerns that banning TikTok could set a precedent that could be used against other social networks.
The legislation directed at ByteDance would grant the U.S. President the authority to designate other apps as national security threats if they are controlled by a country deemed hostile to the United States.
