Egyptian airport customs staff thwart bids to smuggle drugs, gold, jewelry
Customs officers at Hurghada International Airport have thwarted an attempt to smuggle tramadol tablets into the country in breach of Egyptian anti-narcotics laws.
Fifteen strips of 100 ml pills were found among clothes in the luggage of a female passenger arriving from Slovakia. Her case has been referred for prosecution.
Separately, several bids were made to sneak jewelry and gold bars into Egypt through other airports.
At Cairo International Airport, customs officers seized gold bars hidden in the undergarments of a male traveller arriving in the capital on an Egyptian flight from Kuwait.
And at Assiut International Airport, a gold bar weighing approximately 400 grams was discovered in the luggage of an Egyptian passenger also flying in from Kuwait.
Checks on arrivals from Jeddah resulted in an Egyptian female passenger being found in possession of 52 pieces of gold jewelry, weighing approximately 500 grams.
Meanwhile, customs staff at Borg El-Arab International Airport stopped a passenger arriving from Sharjah in the UAE who was carrying four white-metal chains weighing 660 grams in their bags and wearing another one.
Legal measures have been taken against all the passengers.
