Bangladesh Faces Nationwide Blackouts Amid Coal Shortage and Heatwave
Bangladesh's Payra Power Plant, the country's biggest government-run power plant, had to shut down on Monday due to a coal shortage and a heatwave that has caused a surge in electricity demand.
The country has faced nationwide blackouts of up to five hours a day in recent weeks, and the power grid company reported a 2,500 MW shortage of electricity in the national grid, with daily demand around 16,000 MW.
The Minister for Power Nasrul Hamid said he hoped to normalize the situation within 10 to 15 days, but blamed economic factors, including securing letters of credit, for the shortage.
