African Union Warns of Geostrategic Battleground as Multiple Threats Emerge, Urges Resistance to Instrumentalization
The African Union (AU) warned that Africa should not become a "geostrategic battleground" for global powers as it faces multiple threats to its peace and security.
The continent is being targeted by major powers, including Russia, which has invaded Ukraine and is seeking deeper ties with Africa and Asia.
The AU chair, Moussa Faki Mahamat, called for Africa to resist any form of instrumentalization by other countries and for neutrality to be respected.
Ukraine's foreign minister announced plans to establish new embassies in Africa and hold a summit with the continent.
China and the United States have also dispatched their foreign ministers to Africa in rival diplomatic offensives.
Despite successes, the AU acknowledged negative factors such as unconstitutional changes of government, insecurity, terrorism, and the spread of weapons.
