Afghan Women's Rights Declared Internal Issue by Taliban

The Taliban authorities have declared that women's rights are internal issues for Afghanistan to resolve. This statement precedes the third round of United Nations-led talks in Qatar. Civil society representatives, including women’s rights groups, will join separate meetings with international envoys and UN officials, while the Taliban-led delegation will primarily focus on narcotics and economic issues.
KABUL: The Taliban authorities asserted on Saturday that matters concerning women’s rights are internal issues to be dealt with by Afghanistan itself.

This statement comes as the Taliban prepare to attend the third round of United Nations-led talks in Qatar.

Since taking power in 2021, the Taliban have imposed restrictions on women that the UN has labeled as ‘gender apartheid.’ Civil society representatives, including women’s rights groups, will join meetings after the official talks between Taliban, international envoys, and UN officials.

The Taliban government, yet to be recognized internationally, will be represented by spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid.

Mujahid emphasized the necessity for a unified Afghan delegation and highlighted the agenda to focus on narcotics and economic issues.
