A Loft-Like Flat in a Converted London Warehouse

A Loft-Like Flat in a Converted London Warehouse

Housed in a former cotton-mill complex, the light-filled home features high ceilings, exposed brick, and a wrought-iron spiral staircase.

A striking two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment in East London occupies the historic Lion Mills building, a former cotton factory set just off Hackney Road. The 1,039-square-foot dwelling is tucked toward the back of the renovated building’s top floor and features an open-plan layout with ample windows and a pitched roof.

The 19th-century Lion Mills building formerly housed cotton, silk, and wool manufacturing facilities. Now, the repurposed structure offers loft-like apartments that pay tribute to the site’s storied past.

Upon entry, a small hallway with built-in storage leads to the L-shaped living spaces, where a wrought-iron spiral staircase casually separates the primary gathering areas. Arched windows wrap around the kitchen, dining area, and living room, flooding the main level with natural light. The updated kitchen combines dark cabinets with natural-stone countertops and mirror-tiled backsplash.

The 1,039-square-foot apartment features arched windows and tall ceilings that elevate the home’s loft-like proportions.

A wrought-iron staircase separates the primary living areas and connects the main floor with the mezzanine level.

Original details can be found throughout the converted warehouse flat, including refinished hardwood floors and exposed brick walls that hint at the building’s industrial heritage. The ornate staircase leads to a semi-enclosed mezzanine level, which includes the primary bedroom with a large skylight, as well as an en suite bathroom with a double-ended soaking tub. On the main level near the primary living spaces, there is an additional bedroom that can easily be converted into a home office.

In the kitchen, custom cabinets complement the building’s original black-framed windows. A long dining table includes built-in seating that provides additional storage for residents.

Mirror-tiled backsplash infuses the industrial-style kitchen with added character.

The Lion Mills building offers a shared courtyard garden, but there are also a number of nearby green spaces that residents can enjoy, including Haggerston Park, Victoria Park, and London Fields. The flat is also conveniently located less than a mile from the popular Broadway Market, as well as the Columbia Road Flower Market. Scroll ahead to see more of the converted warehouse apartment, which is currently on the market in London.

In the en suite bathroom, mirrored tiles enhance the overall sense of space.
