BEIJING: Chinese leader Xi Jinping and invited guests including Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un have arrived at the historic Tiananmen Gate to watch a military parade on Wednesday in Beijing.
Prior to ascending to the viewing platform, Xi greeted each guest with handshakes on the red carpet.
The platform offers a view of Tiananmen Square. The dignitaries, flanked by Putin and Kim, made their way to the seating area while the audience applauded politely.
They paused to honor five World War II veterans, some over 100 years old.
The gathering includes around two dozen foreign leaders from nations seeking to bolster or maintain relations with Beijing.Marking the 80th anniversary of WWII's end, the parade will display missiles, modern fighter jets, and other military assets as China aims to increase its global influence.
Some equipment is being shown to the public for the first time.Domestically, this event serves as a reminder of China's progress since WWII, which often receives less attention compared to European and Pacific battles due to China's significant contributions and losses during the war, including millions killed by Japanese invasion and conflict.
This military parade also serves as a demonstration of strength to bolster support for the Communist Party and Xi, portraying China as a global alternative to the U.S.-led postwar era.
