The United States lifts sanctions designations on several allies of Myanmar's ruling generals following a letter from the head of the ruling junta praising President Donald Trump and calling for an easing of sanctions.
In a move described as 'extremely worrying' by Human Rights Watch, the US Treasury Department has removed several individuals and entities allied with Myanmar's military junta from its sanctions list.
This decision comes two weeks after General Min Aung Hlaing, who heads the ruling junta in Myanmar, sent a letter to President
Donald Trump expressing admiration for his leadership and requesting a reduction in tariffs on Myanmar exports to the US.
The general also proposed a reduced tariff rate and asked for the consideration of easing economic sanctions imposed on Myanmar, citing shared interests and prosperity between the two countries.
Critics argue that this shift in US policy could undermine efforts to hold the military regime accountable for its actions, including crimes against humanity and genocide.
