Saudi student dies after 'unprovoked' stabbing in Cambridge; suspect charged with murder
A Saudi citizen was fatally stabbed in an apparent unprovoked attack in the English city of Cambridge, where he was studying at a language school.
The Saudi Embassy in London said on Monday that it was coordinating with British authorities to discover the full circumstances of an incident in the English city of Cambridge in which a Saudi citizen was fatally stabbed.
The 20-year-old victim, Mohammed Al-Qasim, was found by officers responding to reports of violence in the Mill Park area of the city shortly before midnight on Friday with serious injuries and died at the scene soon after.
A post-mortem examination is due to take place on Tuesday.
A 21-year-old man from Cambridge has been charged with murder and possession of a knife in a public place, and was due to appear at Peterborough Magistrates’ Court on Monday.
Additionally, a 50-year-old man from the same city, who was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender, remains in custody, according to Cambridgeshire Police.
The incident is being treated as an 'unprovoked attack', with Al-Qasim having been a student at a language school in Cambridge on a 10-week placement.
The Saudi embassy is working with UK agencies to discover the full circumstances of the incident and to facilitate the repatriation of the victim's body to Saudi Arabia.
In a statement, the family of Al-Qasim described him as 'a young man brimming with enthusiasm' and offered condolences and sympathy to his family.
