Saudi Arabia Introduces Initiatives to Boost Tourism Sector
Saudi Arabia has launched a new initiative called "Hospitality Investment Enablers" to encourage tourism growth by improving business efficiency, project success rates, and access to government-owned land.
The Minister of Tourism, Ahmed Al-Khateeb, announced this at the "100 Million Welcomes Celebration" in Riyadh.
The initiative, developed with the Ministry of Investment, simplifies bureaucratic procedures and removes market entry obstacles. It includes the upcoming launch of the Tourism Investment One Stop Shop, which aims to consolidate all investor needs in one location, in partnership with the Saudi Business Center.
Tourism in Saudi Arabia has seen a significant increase, with visitor numbers reaching 106.2 million in 2023, which is a 56% rise compared to 2019 and 12% more than in 2022. Tourist spending has contributed 4% to the national GDP, totaling over SR250 billion ($66 billion) in 2023.
Al-Khateeb acknowledged the positive influence of tourism on the local culture and economy and announced the Saudi Tourism Excellence Award to honor professionals in the industry. The demand for tourism activity licenses soared by 390% in 2023, signaling robust growth.
He also noted the progress of mega-projects like NEOM, Red Sea Project, AMAALA, AlUla, and Qiddiya. The Tourism Investment Enabler Program has been created to ease business operations within the Saudi tourism sector and make them more cost-efficient.
In his remarks, Al-Khateeb mentioned a restructured tourism license fee system and a reduction in annual government fees by nearly 22% due to effective government collaboration.
He also recognized the joint efforts of government entities, international organizations, the private sector, and investors in enhancing Saudi Arabia's tourism industry.
